Combustion

Combustion is a chemical reaction chemical that occurs between a fuel and an oxidizing agent that produces energy, usually in the form of heat and light. A combustion reaction is a type of chemical reaction where a compoundand an oxidant is reacted to produce heat and a new product. The general form of a combustion reaction is the reaction between a hydrocarbon and oxygen to yield carbon dioxide and water: a chemical reaction between substances, usually including oxygen and usually accompanied by the generation of heat and light in the form of flame. The rate or speed at which the reactants combine is high, in part because of the nature of the chemical reaction itself and in part because more energy is generated than can escape into the surrounding medium, with the result that the temperature of the reactants is raised to accelerate the reaction even more. A familiar example is a lighted match. When amatch is struck, friction heats the head to a temperature at which the chemicals react and generate more heat than can escape into the air, and they burn with a flame.

hydrocarbon + O2 → CO2 + H2O

Combustion Reaction Examples

Examples of combustion reactions include:

2 H2 + O2 → 2H2O + heat

CH4 + 2 O2 → CO2 + 2 H2O + heat
