It is Simple network managment protocol in the early days of the ARPANET. The PING utility was used to deduct the problem in network, because of the number of routers was so samll therefore it was feasible to ping each one to see the probelm.
SNMP provides a common mechanism for network devices to relay management information within single and multi-vendor LAN or WAN environments.
It is an application layer protocol in the OSI model framework and SNMP protocol is implemented using the User Datagram Protocol (UDP).
