Elastic Modulus
The ratio of the stress in a body to the corresponding strain called elastic modulus, it is also called as coefficient of elasticity. It is the ratio of pressure applied to a body to the resistance produced by the body.
Types of Modulus of Elasticity
If it is the ratio of longitudinal stress to stain than it is called young’s modulus.
If it is the ratio of stress to the fraction decrease in the volume of the body then it is called bulk modulus.
If it is the ratio of tangential force per unit area to the angular deformation of the body then it is called module of rigidity or shear modulus.
For example, The brush handle has a higher elastic modulus than what the bristles of the brush tend to have because they are meant to bend easy when they are in our hair while we need the handle to be stiff.
Unit of elastic modulus
Unit of normal Stress is Pascal and longitudinal strain has no unit. Because longitudinal strain is the ratio of change in length to the original length. So the unit of modulus of elasticity is same as of stress and it is Pascal (Pa). The most commonly Megapascals (MPa) and Gigapascals (GPa) to measure the modulus of Elasticity.
1 MPa = Pa
1 GPa = Pa
Applications
It is used in engineering as well as medical science.
The elastic modulus is used to characterize biological materials like cartilage and bone as well.
The elastic modulus to calculate how much a material will stretch and also how much potential energy will be stored.
The elastic modulus allows you to determine how a given material will respond to Stress.
