Dimensional analysis

The concept of physical dimension was introduced by "Joseph Fourier" in "1892". Dimensional analysis is the analysis which provide the relationships between different physical quantities by identifying their fundamental dimension like length mass and time ,and unit of measure like miles -kilometer, grams, kilograms etc and tracking these dimensions as calculations or comparisons are performed. Dimension analysis ,or more specially the factor label methods is also known as unit -factor method .It is widely used technique the use of algebra. in this concept Converting from one dimensional unit to another is often complex. Physical quantities that are proportionate to have the same dimension, if they have different dimensions, then they are an incommensurable quantity.

Example :

It is meaningless to ask whether a kilogram is less, the same, or more than an hour.

dimension of velocity = Displacement /time

= L/T = M0L1T-1

Constant which possess dimension are called dimension constant and those physical quantity which possess dimensions but do not have a fix value are called dimension variables like displacement ,Force ,velocity etc .

Some List of Dimension Quantities

  • Length (L)
  • Time (T)
  • Mass (M)
  • Temperature (K or also (theta))
  • Current (A)
